Do you think that jokes about certain people are rude or unacceptable?

jokes rude

I’m talking about jokes that belittle people living in certain places, like maybe West Virginia or Kentucky (I live in Ohio, and some people here like to crack on WV and KY for being backwoodsy and hillbillies.)

Also, what about jokes about certain nationalities, genders, etc? Are they ever acceptable?

I usually don’t tell these jokes. Then again, I’m not a very good joke teller, either.
Um, I’m not really offended by these jokes myself (depending on their magnitude, of course). I was just wondering what other people’s thoughts were.

If you can’t take a joke, maybe you seriously need to lighten up! Everyone loves a party pooper, that is why we invited you.

            It’s a fact….people don’t like being offended.

It’s not acceptable unless you are a friend of that person and know how they will react, and they are okay with it.

it depends, some people take jokes well others don’t, you have to know who your audience is before making jokes of that sort.

I’d say if you crack a joke about yourself in regards to a certain nationality, gender, etc, it would be okay, in some situations (ex: I am SUCH a hillbilly)
But to joke about other people because of who they are is never right.

They’re acceptable. Nothing can be offensive if you don’t let it be.

If there funny who cares! I think if they aren’t vulgar people need to lighten up! For some reaon it’s o’k for someone to joke around about their own race, weight, sexuality, state they live in, etc. People act way too sensitive about things like this. If they would just try to see the humor in it and stop being so petty society’s overall sense of humor would be much better!

My take on it is that part of the joke has to be that you are laughing at the IDEA of anyone disliking West Virginians (Asians, women, etc.). This doesn’t have to be inherent in the joke; the tone of voice can accomplish the appropriate sense of irony. When I tell bigoted/offensive jokes (which is not often), it is with the same sense of irony in which hipsters might “enjoy” 80s metal bands or Strawberry Shortcake wall art, if that makes any sense. As a genuinely progressive person, it is my way of taking power away from bigoted comedians and showing that I cannot be hurt by mere jokes.
